The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine's lawsuit against HHS and USDA alleges eight of the nine members on the panel that produced the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans had financial ties to the meat, dairy, egg or low-carb industries, and that the panel took three months to write its report versus roughly two years of independent review under prior guidelines [87]. The suit asks a federal court to force withdrawal of the guidelines, which place protein and animal-based foods atop the new Food Pyramid, and to order new ones written under the Federal Advisory Committee Act [87]. PCRM has challenged the guidelines on similar grounds four times before, winning in 2000 [87].

California's legislature passed AB 2244 unanimously, creating the country's first "Non-Ultraprocessed Certified" seal, which large grocers must display on qualifying products once accredited agencies certify them [152]. Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel says the label helps parents spot healthier options "with a quick glance," while EWG's Bernadette Del Chiaro says it would flag foods "free from the additives, emulsifiers, food dyes and flavours that have come to define the modern American diet" [83]. Governor Gavin Newsom must sign or veto the bill by September 30 [83].

Swedish broadcaster TV4 aired undercover footage from Project 1882 documenting bloody, injured and dying chickens across seven farms run by the country's three major producers, Kronfågel, Guldfågeln and Atria, ahead of Sweden's general election [143]. The suffering traces to selective breeding for fast growth, a practice Project 1882 says affects an estimated 95% of chickens raised in the EU and causes lameness, heart and metabolic disorders and overheating [143]. Three of Sweden's seven parliamentary parties already back a ban on breeding for fast growth, and the Social Democrats spoke out against the practice after the broadcast aired [143].

“These horrific images clearly demonstrate why the breeding and farming of [fast-growing chickens] must be banned in Sweden.”
Benny Andersson, CEO, Project 1882 · [143]
