Marineland's beluga transfers

Where it stands, Sep 4, 2026 A second Marineland beluga, Rain, died at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium days after arriving from Marineland in mid-August, following Peekachu's death there roughly two weeks after the same rushed export.

Marineland, the shuttered Ontario roadside zoo, began shipping its remaining belugas to US aquariums after Canada approved emergency transfer for 28 of the whales, with their health status undisclosed. Three of five belugas Marineland exported to Mystic Aquarium in 2021 later died once the facility found pre-existing health conditions, and Animal Justice says Canadian law requires a public no-breeding guarantee that has not been confirmed for the whales now moving.

The story so far

  1. Sep 4, 2026 Latest

A second Marineland beluga, Rain, died at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium days after arriving from Marineland in mid-August, following Peekachu's death there roughly two weeks after the same rushed export. Animal Justice's Kaitlyn Mitchell called the mass export an epic failure, and the group said the federal export permits carried no requirement barring the animals from being bred at their new homes, unlike past Marineland transfers.

  2. Sep 1, 2026

Two belugas and four dolphins were shipped to Oceanografic in Spain this week, leaving no captive dolphins in Canada, out of the 30 belugas and 4 dolphins Canada approved for export from Marineland. Peekachu was 23 years old when she died at Shedd Aquarium less than two weeks after leaving Marineland.

  3. Aug 28, 2026

Animal Justice called on Canada's Fisheries Minister to investigate beluga Peekachu's death and demanded a pause on further Marineland transports, saying she was likely suffering from compromised health when exported from Canada despite government assurances of independent health checks. Six belugas remain at Marineland awaiting transport.

  4. Aug 27, 2026

A beluga named Peekachu died two weeks after Marineland shipped her to Shedd Aquarium, echoing the pattern of illness and death Mystic Aquarium saw after its 2021 transfer, in which 3 of 5 belugas later died once pre-existing health conditions were found. Animal Justice's Kaitlyn Mitchell called the death devastating but not surprising, and the group has said Canada approved 30 Marineland whales for export without confirming they were healthy enough to withstand transport.

  5. Aug 8, 2026

Thirteen belugas have reached the US since July 21, six to Shedd Aquarium and seven to SeaWorld San Antonio, out of 28 Canada approved for transfer. Marine mammal biologist Naomi Rose said the longer transfers to Spain and California are unnecessarily stressful for animals none of whom are fully well.

  6. Aug 7, 2026

SeaWorld San Antonio took in seven more Marineland belugas this week, bringing to 9 of the 30 approved for transfer the number now at that facility. Animal Justice lawyer Alexandra Pester called on SeaWorld to rule out breeding them, noting that 19 belugas, an orca and a dolphin have died at Marineland since 2019.

  7. Jul 29, 2026

Marineland shipped six belugas to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and SeaWorld San Antonio this week, with more transfers due to follow to facilities in San Diego, Georgia and Spain. Animal Justice said it is incredibly disappointing that likely none of Marineland's survivors will ever experience life in the ocean.

  8. Jul 21, 2026

Marineland began shipping six belugas to Shedd Aquarium, Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld and Oceanogràfic València, after Canada approved emergency transfer for 28 of Marineland's whales though their health status was not disclosed.
