Marineland's animal clearout
Marineland, the shuttered Ontario roadside zoo, is emptying its captive deer and elk population under a self-imposed July 24 deadline, and a whistleblower says some of the roughly 500 animals are being trucked straight to slaughterhouses. Animal Justice has asked federal and provincial regulators to investigate before the clearout finishes, testing what accountability a closed roadside zoo faces for the animals it leaves behind.

A Marineland employee told Animal Justice the park wants all of its roughly 500 confined deer and elk gone by July 24, with more than 100 already trucked off-site and some possibly sent straight to slaughterhouses; the whistleblower also described facial wounds, damaged antlers, fence lacerations, and poor veterinary care. Animal Justice asked the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Ontario's Animal Welfare Services to investigate before more animals leave the property.
