Ireland's Plant-Based Food Fund push

Where it stands, Sep 28, 2026 The Vegan Society of Ireland asked the government to create a state-backed Plant-Based Food Fund in Budget 2027, plus a published National Plant-Based Action Plan and dedicated grants for farmers entering horticulture, citing Ireland's 83% produce-import rate and a drop from more than 600 commercial vegetable growers in the 1990s to fewer than 70 today.

The Vegan Society of Ireland is pressing the government to create a state-backed Plant-Based Food Fund in Budget 2027, on the scale of Denmark's roughly 170 million euro program, to help farmers convert land to fruit and vegetable production. Ireland imports about 83% of the produce it eats and its commercial vegetable growers have fallen below 70, down from more than 600 in the 1990s, testing whether the state will back a shift from livestock to horticulture.
