The FDA issued its first no-questions letter for precision-fermented casein, clearing Formo and Those Vegan Cowboys to sell the animal-free dairy protein in the US [101][63]. The letter covers cheese alternatives at up to 25% inclusion, and the two firms, who co-developed the protein, now pursue it separately [63]. Green Queen describes it as a milestone ahead of the FDA's proposed elimination of the self-affirmed GRAS pathway [63].

“FDA clearance opens the door to the US market, and things will now move quickly.”
Hille van der Kaa, CEO, Those Vegan Cowboys · [101]
“We also have to be able to produce it at a low cost in an integrated way, meaning that you have to find places and also partners that have availability or access to cheap feedstocks and cheap energy, because you need all of those to do that at a sufficiently large scale”
Will van den Tweel, CTO, Those Vegan Cowboys · [101]
By the numbers
  • 25%maximum inclusion rate in cheese alternatives covered by the FDA's review [63]
  • above $13 per lbUS whey protein isolate price, more than triple early 2023 levels, the gap Formo is pitching its casein into [63]
  • over €135Mraised by Formo to date [63]
WatchThose Vegan Cowboys plans an EU regulatory filing in 2027, and both firms plan another GRAS notice covering wider food and nutrition uses [63].

In February, a fishing cat arrived at the Jankichara Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in northeast Bangladesh with a dislocated jaw, weighing barely five kilograms. Weeks of tube feeding brought him to 12 kg, and he has now been released into a tea estate wetland wearing a satellite collar. The Creative Conservation Alliance hopes the 135 tea estates in the region could host more such releases, though one outside zoologist calls this one a conflict translocation, not true rewilding.
