Nucro-Technics sues to overturn Ontario's ban on invasive dog and cat experiments

Nucro-Technics sues to overturn Ontario's ban on invasive dog and cat experiments

Nucro-Technics, a Toronto lab that experiments on dogs, filed an application in Ontario Superior Court to overturn the province's ban on many invasive experiments on dogs and cats, and its lawsuit indicates it will seek an injunction to stop the law taking effect on January 1, 2027 [112]. The company argues the ban intrudes on the federal criminal law power and conflicts with Health Canada drug-approval requirements, even though dog testing is not required by law [112]. Animal Justice says it will seek leave to intervene and defend the law [112].

“Ontarians fought hard to get these protections onto the books, and we will fight just as hard to keep them there.”

EFSA names cultivated meat and precision fermentation as areas needing in-house expertise

EFSA names cultivated meat and precision fermentation as areas needing in-house expertise

The European Food Safety Authority listed cultivated meat and precision fermentation among the priority areas where it needs its own specialist expertise, in a paper meant to inform its next strategy [79]. It says risk assessments in those areas must become "faster and fit-for-purpose," and it concedes its novel food guidance does not list every element assessors need [79]. GFI Europe says that uncertainty over what data to provide has caused lengthy authorisation delays [79].

“In order to build a future-proof regulatory system, EU policymakers must look at the evidence and reverse the Commission’s proposal to exclude novel foods from the Biotech Act’s sandbox scheme”
Lea Seyfarth, policy manager, GFI Europe · [79]

  • More than three yearsaverage EU novel food authorisation time, per studies cited in CellAg Deutschland's action plan [79]
  • 17 monthsthe regulation sets out for the same process [79]
WatchThe European Parliament and the Council are still negotiating the Biotech Act; ENVI committee MEPs have said the blanket sandbox exclusion for novel foods should go [79].

Mercy For Animals scored the 25 largest US burger chains on plant-based options, menu placement, pricing and marketing, and gave McDonald's 1 point out of 30 [77]. By the charity's count only six of the 25 chains sell a dedicated plant-based patty, and Bareburger topped the list with the full 30 [77]. McDonald's piloted a Beyond Beef McPlant in San Francisco and Dallas but never made it permanent, while it still sells plant-based burgers in the UK, the Netherlands and other markets [77].

“McDonald’s has helped shape the way generations of people eat. Today, it has another opportunity to lead by expanding plant-based menu options for American consumers”
Arash Yomtobian, president and CEO, Mercy for Animals · [77]

  • Plate pick: Bare Beans, a US startup, launched five preservative-free kettle-cooked bean varieties (chickpeas, black, gravy, navy, red) on its website after a $2.79M seed round; they keep 90 days in the fridge and a year in the freezer. [74]
  • GFI India's survey of 414 urban Indians (plus eight focus groups) found 94% willing to try cultivated meat, though affordability was the top barrier at 35%; it is an advocacy group's own poll, and no product is approved there yet. [76]

A North Carolina family used to raise 500,000 broiler chickens a year in four barns. With help from Mercy For Animals' Transfarmation Project they turned one barn into a greenhouse for specialty mushrooms, and that single barn now earns them more than the four chicken barns did. Project director Katherine Jernigan puts it plainly: the farmers are making a profit, which is a low bar to clear when poultry growers' median net income was under $5,000 a year. [101]
