What it is
Lanolin is a wax that sheep secrete from the sebaceous glands in their skin to keep their own fleece soft and water-repellent. It is recovered as a byproduct of the wool trade: freshly shorn wool is scoured in hot water and detergent, and the grease that washes out is lanolin, which makes up somewhere between 5 and 25 per cent of the weight of raw wool. A single merino sheep can yield a few hundred millilitres of it a year. Chemically it is about 97 per cent long-chain waxy esters, and despite old names like wool fat it holds no glycerides, so it is not a true fat at all. The point that matters for this question is that no sheep is killed to produce it, which is why some people wave it through; but it is still a substance taken from an animal's body for human use, and that is the line veganism draws.
Why it catches people out
The lanolin most shoppers never picture is the kind they swallow. The US Office of Dietary Supplements says vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is typically made by irradiating 7-dehydrocholesterol drawn from lanolin, itself taken from sheep's wool, so the ordinary D3 in supplements, fortified plant milks and breakfast cereals usually began life on a sheep's back. There is a true plant-based route, D3 made from lichen, and there is vitamin D2 made by irradiating a yeast sterol, but neither is the default, and a label reading only 'vitamin D3' or 'cholecalciferol' tells you nothing about which was used. On the outside of the body, lanolin turns up in moisturisers, lip balms, the nipple creams sold to new mothers and a great many ointments, valued for the way it keeps water against the skin. If avoiding it matters to you, the practical move is to choose a D3 that names lichen as its source, or a D2 supplement, and to treat a bare 'cholecalciferol' as a question rather than an answer.
How it is made
Lanolin is the waxy secretion of a sheep’s sebaceous glands, coating each wool fibre to waterproof the fleece. It is not taken from skin. It is recovered when raw wool is scoured, washed in hot water and detergent to strip out dirt, sweat salts and grease, with the grease then separated from the wash water by centrifuge or solvent extraction. Crude lanolin makes up somewhere between 5 and 25 percent of a freshly shorn fleece by weight, and a single sheep yields roughly 250 to 300 mL of recoverable grease.
No sheep is shorn or killed for lanolin specifically; it rides along as a byproduct of wool, and that is exactly the reason vegans decline it. The Vegan Society’s definition excludes products derived wholly or partly from animals, and puts wool alongside leather and silk. Merinos and other wool breeds were bred over generations to grow fleece continuously rather than shed it, so shearing became a genuine welfare need for those particular animals. That nuance is real, and it does not change the verdict.
The shearing question
Shearing is a documented acute stressor rather than a haircut. A 2019 PLOS ONE study of extensively managed Australian sheep found that 86.8 percent of ewes examined immediately after shearing or crutching carried at least one skin lesion, averaging 5.4 lesions per animal. The RSPCA attributes much of that injury rate to time pressure, since shearers paid by the head can work through up to 200 sheep in a day, and to inconsistent training. Wool-flock sheep are also generally culled for meat once fleece quality or fertility falls off.
How to tell
Lanolin travels under a long list of synonyms, so scan for wool wax, wool grease, wool fat, Adeps Lanae, lanolin alcohol, lanolin acid, and hydrous or anhydrous lanolin. Chewing gum is the awkward case: lanolin is a federally permitted component of gum base in the US, and gum base is not required to itemise its components, so a wrapper that never says lanolin is not evidence of absence. Vegan gum brands advertise a plant-based or synthetic base for exactly that reason. On cosmetics and supplements, a Vegan Society, Certified Vegan or Leaping Bunny mark is the shortcut.
