What it is
A fig is not really one fruit but a syconium: a soft, hollow pouch lined on the inside with dozens of tiny flowers, which is why botanists call it an infructescence rather than a berry. Whatever you call it, it grows on a tree and holds no animal tissue, so by the plain definition of veganism, avoiding animal products, a fig qualifies with no asterisk needed. The reason anyone hesitates is the fig wasp, and the biology really is worth knowing. In the wild, and in certain commercial varieties, a female wasp squeezes into an unripe fig through a pinhole opening called the ostiole, usually tearing off her own wings and antennae to fit, pollinates the flowers, lays her eggs, and dies inside the fruit. The plant then releases an enzyme, ficain, that breaks her body down, so what a person might eat is not a wasp but a fig that has absorbed one.
So are you eating wasps?
Here is the honest, calming version of the answer. The wasp-and-fig bargain only applies to figs that need pollinating, and a great many of the figs we actually eat do not. Common-type figs, which cover a lot of what you find fresh and dried, are parthenocarpic: their flowers are all female and they set fruit with no pollination, and so no wasp at all. Where a wasp is involved, in the Smyrna-type figs that must be pollinated by a wasp carrying pollen from a wild caprifig, the insect is minute, is broken down by the fruit's own enzymes, and what is left is measured in specks rather than bodies; and even then the thing on your plate is a plant, not an animal product. This is why figs are treated as vegan across the board: the definition turns on what a food is, not on every creature that touched it while it grew, and by that measure an apple visited by a bee and a fig pollinated by a wasp are both simply fruit.
What is actually going on
A fig is not a fruit in the ordinary sense. It is a syconium, an inflorescence turned outside in: a fleshy pouch lined internally with hundreds of tiny flowers that never see daylight. Male caprifig trees hold the pollen and host the wasp broods. Female trees come in two kinds, and the difference decides everything. Smyrna-type flowers need fertilisation to ripen. Common-type flowers are parthenocarpic, ripening into fruit with no fertilisation event at all.
The pollinator is one species, Blastophaga psenes, a wasp about 1.5 mm long locked into an obligate partnership with the fig documented back at least 60 million years. A mated female forces her way through the ostiole, the narrow pore at the fig’s tip, usually shredding her wings and antennae on the way in. Inside a caprifig she lays her eggs and dies. Her wingless sons mate with their sisters and chew an exit tunnel before dying themselves, and the newly mated, pollen-dusted daughters fly out to find another fig.
When a female dies inside a fig, the fruit supplies ficin from its own latex, a protein-digesting enzyme. Over the days the fig ripens, ficin breaks her exoskeleton, muscle and organs down into amino acids the plant reabsorbs. No shell, no wing fragment, nothing recognisable survives to the table. The crunch people attribute to wasp bodies is the fig’s own achenes, the many tiny true seeds packed through the flesh, and they are present in every fig regardless.
Which figs, exactly
Almost every fresh fig in a supermarket is a parthenocarpic common type: Black Mission, Brown Turkey, Kadota, Adriatic, Celeste. No wasp enters them and the question does not arise. Growers of these varieties actively keep wasps out, since an entry point lets in fruit-spoiling fungus. The exception is the Smyrna type, sold in the US mainly as Calimyrna and common among imported Turkish dried figs, which does require pollination. Its growers hang mesh bags of wasp-loaded caprifigs in the trees each spring, a practice called caprification, essentially unchanged since it was brought to California in 1899.
Vegan organisations, the Vegan Society among them, list figs as vegan without qualification, treating a wasp’s death inside a wild mutualism as different in kind from farming an animal for a product. The honest position keeps both halves: the wasp story is true, and it is true of a minority of figs most people never buy. Fig paste in biscuits is the one place it is genuinely unknowable, since manufacturers blend varieties and rarely name them.
