A randomized trial of 108 adults aged 55 and older gave half lacto-ovo vegetarian counseling and half omnivorous counseling, then put everyone through 12 weeks of resistance training [25]. The vegetarian arm ate less protein, and the trial could not show the vegetarian diet was noninferior for protein intake or for appendicular muscle mass [33]. Both groups still built muscle and improved leg press strength and chair stand performance, and this was a vegetarian diet with eggs and dairy, not a vegan one [33].

“Protein intake is lower in the vegetarian group, and noninferiority for appendicular muscle mass is not demonstrated. Yet, both groups achieve a protein intake of ≥1.2 g/kg/d and show improved muscle mass, strength, and function during resistance training.”

Slovenian startup Juicy Marbles released Granny's Roast, a turkey-style roulade rolled around a layer of herbs, in the EU and the US [59]. It is the brand's first poultry-style product after a range built on red meat and seafood [61]. The company says the fibrous structure carves into clean spiral slices and needs only a brush of oil and 25 to 30 minutes in the oven [61]. It is sold on the Juicy Marbles US webstore in limited quantities at $29.99 for a 600g roast that feeds four [59][61].

Madre Brava models a German grocery tipping point for plant-based protein

The climate group Madre Brava, working with Systemiq, WWF International and Brent Loken, modelled how German food retail could shift toward plant-based protein [62]. It found a handful of grocers holding 40% of the market, plus quick followers, could be enough [62]. These are scenarios from the report's authors, not observed sales, and the tipping point lands anywhere from 2030 to 2043 depending on how hard grocers push [62].

A federal judge in Mato Grosso, Brazil, has ordered ranchers, their employees and their cattle out of the Piripkura Indigenous Territory within 120 days, with a fine of 500 reais a day for anyone who stays [71]. The land is home to at least two Piripkura people living in voluntary isolation, and the order follows fresh evidence of illegal clearing for cattle ranching inside it [71]. Cattle leaving a forest that people are trying to keep unseen is a rare tidy outcome, and prosecutors say the long deadline is meant to let occupants leave without a confrontation [71].
