Is it vegan?

Last reviewed July 15, 2026

Glucosamine

The joint supplement most people reach for is usually built from crab and shrimp shells. A corn-fermented vegan version exists, but it is the exception, so the default bottle is off the menu.

Where it hides

  • Joint and mobility supplements
  • Glucosamine and chondroitin combinations
  • Some pet joint supplements

What it is

Glucosamine is a building block of cartilage, taken as a supplement for joint health. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, a government body, describes what it is.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are constituents of cartilage, a component of the joints.

As a supplement, though, it is not extracted from cartilage. It is made from a different animal source, with one plant exception.

It is produced commercially by the hydrolysis of shellfish exoskeletons or, less commonly, by fermentation of a grain such as corn or wheat.

The vegan version

So the standard product, hydrolysed from crab, shrimp and lobster shells, is not vegan, and it carries a shellfish-allergy warning for the same reason. The alternative is glucosamine fermented from corn, sold as vegan or shellfish-free glucosamine. If the label does not say plant-based, assume it comes from shellfish.

Frequently asked

Is glucosamine made from shellfish?

Usually. Most glucosamine is produced commercially by processing the shells of shellfish such as shrimp, crab and lobster, which is also why it carries a shellfish-allergy caution. A less common version is fermented from corn and suits a vegan diet.

Is there a vegan glucosamine?

Yes. Vegan glucosamine is made by fermenting a grain such as corn rather than from shellfish shells, and is usually labelled vegan or shellfish-free. Standard glucosamine that does not specify a plant source is animal-derived.
