A French cohort of 89,953 adults found that those with the highest estimated intake of meat-derived Neu5Gc, a sugar concentrated in beef and lamb, had a 63% higher risk of type 2 diabetes than those with the lowest [22]. It is a preliminary observational result presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes meeting in Milan, so it shows an association, not a cause [22]. The link weakened after adjusting for body mass index but stayed significant, and the researchers say they do not know what intake level triggers an immune response [22].

“Our findings support chronic inflammation as a specific mechanism linking red meat consumption with T2D, partly beyond the amount of red meat a person eats and partly independent of body fat”
Dr. Leopold Fezeu, lead author, Université Sorbonne Paris Nord · [22]
By the numbers
  • 63%higher type 2 diabetes risk, top fifth versus bottom fifth of meat-derived Neu5Gc intake [22]
  • 41%higher risk in the second-highest group [22]
  • 966new type 2 diabetes cases over a median 7.2 years of follow-up [22]
  • 97 gmedian daily red meat among men in the top intake group, versus 5 g in the bottom group [22]

Cellugy scales fermentation-made skincare ingredient to 15,000 litres at Belgian pilot plant

Cellugy scales fermentation-made skincare ingredient to 15,000 litres at Belgian pilot plant

Danish startup Cellugy ran its EcoFlexy fermentation process at 15,000 litres at the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant in Ghent, Belgium, up from four litres in 16 months [46]. The company says product quality and performance reproduced consistently, and that is its and its partner's account, with no outside audit in the report [46]. The ingredient, a cellulose thickener grown by bacteria from sugar, targets a market where nearly 70% of rheology modifiers come from petrochemicals [46].

“Scaling production to 15,000 litres is more than an operational achievement. It is a commercial validation that enables deeper engagement with strategic customers and manufacturing partners”

Colorado voters decide Amendment 83 on Nov. 3, 2026, a measure to establish a constitutional right to hunt and trap [49]. Gov. Jared Polis urges a no vote [49]. The Animal Emotions columnist argues it would protect methods Colorado banned about 30 years ago, including steel-jaw traps, snaring, poisoning, baiting and spring bear hunting; that is the columnist's reading, not a report on the measure's text [49].

“We should keep expanding outdoor recreation opportunities in a sustainable way, protecting wildlife, and finding compromises that work for everyone”
