California's 2026-27 budget hands $500 million in one-time funding to school kitchens, and for the first time districts can spend it on plant-based food and non-dairy milk, not just equipment [88]. It converts January's federal Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, which ended an 80-year cow's-milk mandate, into money districts can actually use [88]. Real budget line, not a press release.

By the numbers
  • $500Min KIT funding for 2026-27, over triple the $145M competitive round in 2025 [88]
  • 120+school districts and partner organizations signed the coalition letter requesting the plant-based line item [88]

Proven"$500 million in one-time funding" for the Kitchen Infrastructure and Training Program (California's enacted 2026-27 budget, signed by Governor Newsom) [88]. It's a signed appropriation, not a proposal.

Company claim"a significant win for California students, families, and school nutrition programs" (Marjorie Mulhall, Plant Based Foods Association) [88]. The lobbying group's own framing of a policy it pushed for.

UK regulators smooth the path for cultivated meat

Regulatory paperwork is the least glamorous form of progress, and cultivated meat needs a lot of it.

The UK's Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland released four new guidance documents on cell-cultivated meat, the second tranche from their regulatory sandbox launched in February 2025 [89]. They cover food hygiene rules, how to characterize cell lines, and taste-trial requirements, aimed at the reasons applications most often stall [89]. It's process, not approval, but process is what separates a lab pitch from a shelf date.

“Cell-cultivated products represent a genuinely new frontier for the food industry, and we want businesses to have the clearest possible picture of what is required to bring safe products to market.”
Dr Thomas Vincent, FSA Deputy Director of Innovation · [89]

A horse goes down at the Calgary Stampede

The cowboy needed the horse to stand up; the horse needed the cowboy to stop.

During a live-televised bronc-riding event on July 7, a rodeo worker repeatedly struck a downed horse named Ice Cube in the head and yanked his mane trying to force him up [121]. Animal Justice filed a legal complaint, and the Calgary Humane Society has opened an investigation [121]. Alberta recently changed its laws to give rodeo and chuckwagon racing a free pass from rules that would otherwise apply, leaving these animals with fewer legal safeguards [121]. It's a preview of what these events look like once that carve-out actually takes effect.

Company claim"at least 110 animals have died as a result of Stampede events" since 1986 (Vancouver Humane Society tally, cited by Animal Justice) [121]. An advocacy group's running count, not an independently audited record.

WatchWhether the Calgary Humane Society's investigation leads to charges before Alberta's rodeo carve-out formally takes effect and forecloses complaints like this one [121].

Carbon-to-fat startup Savor signed a two-year agreement with Swedish fats giant AAK to develop specialty fats for dairy alternatives and bakery, with AAK also taking an equity stake in the smaller company [91]. Savor's Carbon Crafted platform turns captured CO2, green hydrogen and methane into fat molecules without any farm inputs [91]. A legacy commodity player betting real money on a post-agriculture ingredient, in an alt-protein funding climate that's mostly gone quiet.

Company claim"up to 1,000 times less land and generate as much as 98% lower carbon emissions than conventional counterparts" (Savor and AAK) [91]. The companies' own figure; no independent life-cycle assessment is cited.

PETA's science division has spent years arguing that the "forced swim test," dosing small animals and forcing them to swim until they nearly drown to gauge "depression," is cruel and bad science, less reliable than a coin toss at predicting antidepressant effectiveness. It's working: more than 40 universities and 19 companies worldwide have now dropped the test, and in February, Chitkara University became the first in India to formally ban it, with its pharmacy dean writing that "immobility in FST is often a learned, adaptive behavior rather than a valid model for human depression" [104].
