Stearic acid helps activate the sulphur-curing reaction that turns soft rubber into a durable tyre, a process called vulcanisation, and helps the rubber release cleanly from its mould. It's needed in only a small fraction of a percent by weight, but it's a genuine processing step rather than an optional extra.
