Bee pollen looks like plant matter, but by the time it is harvested a bee has already gathered it, wetted it with nectar and saliva and packed it into a pellet, which is why it counts as a bee product.

What it is
Bee pollen starts life as ordinary flower pollen, but it is no longer just plant material by the time it reaches a jar. As a foraging bee moves between flowers it packs pollen onto its hind legs, and a US government clinical reference describes exactly what happens next.
Primary source 01 / 01
Bee pollen is the mixture of plant and flower pollen with nectar and saliva that is used in honey production by bees.
Beekeepers fit a pollen trap across the hive entrance, a fine mesh that brushes some of the pollen pellets off the bees' legs as they squeeze back in. The bees keep most of what they gathered, but the fraction caught in the trap's collection tray is what gets dried, packaged and sold as bee pollen. Its exact mix of vitamins, minerals and plant compounds varies with whatever the bees were foraging that week, but the process behind it, a bee gathering, wetting and carrying it, is the same every time.
HoneyHoney is made by bees, and bees are animals, so honey is not vegan. Maple syrup, agave and date syrup are the usual swaps.
Royal jellyRoyal jelly is bee food, secreted by workers to raise queens. Like honey and beeswax, it is something taken from a hive, which puts it outside a vegan diet by definition.
PropolisPropolis is bee glue, the resin bees use to seal the hive. Like honey and beeswax, it is a product of the colony, so it is off the vegan list.
Beeswax (E901)Beeswax is a bee product. Worker bees secrete it to build the comb, so the shine on a waxed apple or a sweet, and the base of many a lip balm, comes straight from the hive.
Frequently asked
Is bee pollen the same as pollen from a plant?
No. Raw flower pollen is plant material, but bee pollen has already been collected, moistened with nectar and saliva and packed into pellets by a bee before a beekeeper harvests it. That processing is what makes it a bee product rather than a plant one.
Is bee pollen vegetarian?
Most vegetarians accept it, in the same way many accept honey, since no bee is killed to produce it. Vegans generally avoid it because it is still gathered and processed by bees for the hive's own use, and diverting it is treated the same as taking honey.
