Michael Herschel Greger was born on October 25, 1972, in Miami, Florida. He later said he decided to become a doctor at age nine, after watching his grandmother recover using diet and lifestyle changes recommended by nutritionist Nathan Pritikin. Greger earned his MD from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1999 and spent years touring hospitals and universities with public-health lectures before founding NutritionFacts.org in 2011, a nonprofit that turns peer-reviewed nutrition research into short, free videos. His 2015 book How Not to Die became a New York Times best seller and carried that citation-heavy style of nutrition advice into the mainstream.

Why it still matters

Greger built one of the largest free libraries of diet science on the internet, and made the case for plant-based eating with footnotes instead of guilt, in a field usually run on hype.
