Dominion premiered in Melbourne on 29 March 2018, the work of writer, director, and producer Chris Delforce, an Australian animal rights activist. Filmed largely with drones and hidden cameras inside Australian slaughterhouses and factory farms, it set out to expose what its own credits call an "opaque and inhumane system." Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Sadie Sink, and the singer Sia provided narration, lending the footage a level of mainstream reach that most animal-rights documentaries never get. It arrived as a feature-length successor to Delforce's earlier film Lucent, funded through crowdfunding and the Australian group Voiceless.

Why it still matters

Released free online, Dominion became a fixture of vegan outreach: a piece of evidence, not argument, that thousands of newly vegan people point to as the thing that actually changed their mind.
