Angela Yvonne Davis was born on January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama. She spent the following decades as a philosopher, prison abolitionist, and one of the most recognizable voices of the Black liberation and feminist left, long before most people knew what she ate. That changed at the 27th Empowering Women of Color Conference in 2012, when Davis told the audience she was vegan and had decided to stop keeping it quiet. She tied the choice directly to her politics, arguing that cruelty toward animals and cruelty toward people flow from the same industrial machine.

  1. I usually don't mention that I'm vegan but that has evolved.

  2. Most people don't think about the fact that they're eating animals. When they're eating a steak or eating chicken, most people don't think about the tremendous suffering that those animals endure simply to become food products to be consumed by human beings.

Why it still matters

Davis made veganism legible as part of a radical tradition that already carried her name, not a lifestyle bolted onto it after the fact. For a movement often dismissed as white and apolitical, hearing one of the era's most cited thinkers say it out loud gave the connection between animal and human liberation real intellectual weight.
