Vegan shoes and trainers: what the label doesn't tell you

A trainer with a fully synthetic mesh upper can still contain animal parts you never see. The upper gets checked because it is the part you touch and the part brands photograph, but a finished shoe is built from a lasting board, an insole, a lining, two stiffeners, an outsole and a layer of adhesive holding all of it together, and each of those has its own material history.

The lining and the sock, the thin layer under your foot, are traditionally leather or pigskin because pig hide is thin, breathable and cheap to split. A budget shoe with a canvas or synthetic upper can still have a pigskin sockliner stitched in for comfort, and nothing on the outside of the shoe tells you that. The heel counter and the toe puff, the stiff shapes that hold a shoe's structure at the back of the heel and the front of the toe, are usually a thermoplastic-impregnated fabric today, a material the trade calls Texon after one of its main suppliers, but older and higher-end constructions still use leather board in the same spot because it molds cleanly under heat.

Then there is the glue. Shoe manufacturing depends on adhesive at almost every stage, bonding the upper to the lining, the lasting board to the insole, and the outsole to everything above it. Traditional shoemaking used animal hide glue, rendered from collagen in skin and connective tissue, because it bonded leather well and was cheap where tanneries already produced hide waste. The modern footwear industry has mostly moved to polyurethane hot-melt adhesives, chosen for water resistance and bond strength rather than for being animal-free, and manufacturers rarely publish which adhesive went into which shoe. That absence of disclosure is exactly why even PETA, an organisation that campaigns for vegan buying, states outright that it cannot guarantee the glue in the mainstream sneakers it recommends is animal-free. If an advocacy group with an interest in a clean answer will not claim certainty on glue, no shopper should assume it either.

The label almost nobody reads correctly

Every shoe sold in the EU and the UK carries a composition label, required since Directive 94/11/EC took effect in 1994 and still enforced in Britain today through the Footwear (Indication of Composition) Labelling Regulations 1995. It is usually stitched into the tongue or printed on the box, and it is designed to be read without any words at all.

The label pairs a small pictogram of a shoe part with a pictogram for a material, once for each of three zones: the upper, the lining and sock, and the outer sole. The four material categories are leather, coated leather (a leather backing with a coating layer that makes up more than 0.15mm and up to a third of its total thickness), textile, and other materials, which is where synthetic uppers such as polyurethane or bio-based leather alternatives get filed. A manufacturer only has to name whichever material covers at least 80% of that zone's surface area, or 80% of the outer sole's volume, so a shoe that is 70% textile and 30% leather trim can legally show two materials rather than one, and a shoe just over the threshold shows only the dominant one.

That threshold is the part shoppers miss, and it is also the reason the pictogram is more useful than a brand's marketing copy: a marketing page can say vegan upper and be accurate while a hidden lining slips under the 80% cutoff without disclosure, but the label is at least legally required to name the sole and the lining separately from the upper. Checking all three symbols instead of only the one for the upper is the single most transferable skill in this guide, because it works on any brand, in any country that has adopted the same directive, on a shoe this guide never mentions.

What the specific brands actually say, and when

Dr Martens sells a dedicated vegan range built around a material it brands Oxford Rub Off, a polyurethane-coated textile finished to mimic the sheen of its smooth leather, alongside a related Felix Rub Off finish for a higher-shine look, according to the company's own current product listings. The vegan range keeps the brand's signature air-cushioned sole and yellow welt stitching, but it sits alongside, not instead of, Dr Martens' leather lines, so the only reliable check on any individual pair is the specific product page or the composition label, not the brand name.

The canvas Chuck Taylor All Star, by far the brand's biggest seller, has no leather in its construction, and it is one of the styles PETA's own vegan shoe guide lists as vegan. PETA is explicit, though, that it cannot guarantee the adhesive in that shoe, or in any of the mainstream brands it lists, is animal-free, so the glue question is not settled the way the upper material is. The Chuck 70 line is the exception to watch on materials generally: several of its versions carry a leather or faux-leather ankle patch and logo detailing on the sock liner, additions to the original 1970s design that Converse reintroduced as a heritage detail, so the classic canvas Chuck and the retro Chuck 70 are not interchangeable answers to the same question.

Vans built its identity on cotton canvas and vulcanised rubber, and a plain black-on-black canvas Old Skool or a canvas Authentic is vegan by default, a point PETA's own shoe guide makes explicitly. The complication is that Vans' biggest styles, including most Old Skools and the UltraRange line, are sold in suede and leather versions as the default or premium option, with canvas or synthetic listed as a separate SKU, so the shoe's silhouette tells you nothing and the individual listing's material line does.

The running shoe question resolves differently, and it is the most underreported fact in this whole category: mainstream performance running shoes are vegan by default, not by any brand's ethical choice. That is a mechanism worth understanding on its own, covered next.

Why running shoes ended up vegan without anyone marketing it that way

A modern running shoe upper is knit or woven polyester or nylon mesh, chosen because it is lighter than leather, dries faster, and can be engineered to stretch in some zones and resist stretch in others within a single knit pattern, something leather cannot do. The midsole is EVA or a TPU foam, both petrochemical polymers whipped with gas to trap air for cushioning, and the outsole is carbon or blown rubber for grip and durability. None of that supply chain runs through an animal at any point, which is why a running shoe rarely needs a vegan label at all: synthetic construction is the default because it performs better for the job, not because a brand decided to remove leather.

The exception sits at the seams. Cement lasting, the adhesive step that bonds the upper to the insole board and the midsole to the outsole, still runs on polyurethane hot-melt adhesive rather than any animal-derived glue, and manufacturers have shifted toward it for bond strength and moisture resistance, with researchers publishing bio-based polyol variants of the same chemistry as recently as 2022. A small number of running shoe uppers use a thin leather overlay for extra structure around the eyelets or heel, a detail worth checking on any style marketed as a hybrid trail or lifestyle shoe rather than a pure performance trainer.

Boots, workwear and formal shoes: where the vegan gap is genuinely real

Everyday trainers and running shoes solved this problem by accident because synthetics happened to perform better. Boots and formal shoes did not get that shortcut, because the properties that make leather good at those two jobs, structured shaping around the ankle in a boot and a rigid, polished sole in a dress shoe, are harder to replicate synthetically.

A leather work boot or hiking boot uses full-grain or split leather for abrasion resistance and for its ability to be re-treated with waterproofing wax rather than replaced, and the industry standard for a durable boot construction, the Goodyear welt, was built around a leather welt strip that lets a cobbler unstitch and replace the outsole repeatedly without touching the upper. Vegan boots exist in the same welted construction, using synthetic or plant-based upper materials stitched to a synthetic welt, and specialist makers such as Will's Vegan Shoes sell Goodyear-welted vegan boots built to be resoled the same way a leather pair would be. The caveat that applies to leather and synthetic welts alike is that a plastic or rubber welt is less durable than a leather one and rarely survives more than a single resole, so the construction method, not the upper material, is what actually predicts whether a boot lasts.

Formal shoes carry the widest gap of any category, because a traditional dress shoe's leather sole, leather upper and leather-board stiffeners are chosen for a slim profile and a specific flex pattern that bulkier synthetic replacements struggle to match without looking obviously plastic. Vegan formal shoes have improved, mainly through PU-coated microfibers layered to imitate a fine grain, but the category still has the fewest genuinely convincing options of anything covered here, and that is worth saying plainly rather than pretending otherwise.

The repair paradox: the lower-impact choice is not always the obvious one

It is tempting to treat every synthetic shoe as the automatically lower-impact choice, but repairability cuts the other way. A Goodyear-welted leather boot, properly resoled every few years, can stay in service for decades on the same upper, while most cemented constructions, which includes the vast majority of synthetic-upper trainers and running shoes, are built as a single sealed unit that cannot be taken apart and reglued once the outsole wears through. That means a pair of running shoes typically gets replaced entirely after 300 to 500 miles of wear, a lifespan measured in months for a regular runner, while a resoleable boot's leather upper can outlast several outsoles.

None of that makes leather the vegan-friendly answer, and it does not cancel the argument for avoiding it. It means the honest framing is a trade-off between two different kinds of impact, animal sourcing on one side and total material throughput on the other, rather than a single axis where synthetic always wins. The strongest response available to a vegan shopper who wants both is buying secondhand and prioritising the small number of vegan boots that use a genuinely resoleable welted construction rather than a cemented one.

What vegan uppers are actually made from

The materials used for vegan uppers range from plain cotton canvas and polyester microfiber to newer plant-based leathers made from mycelium, cactus, apple pomace and pineapple leaf fibre, each with its own mix of polyurethane binder and plant filler.     This is the weakest category for convincing vegan options, because a slim leather sole and leather-board toe stiffener are hard to replicate without added bulk.

    Workwear boots need abrasion resistance and, in many jobs, a certified safety toe, both traditionally built around leather.

    What to look for: A certified safety rating (such as EN ISO 20345 or ASTM F2413) that does not depend on the upper material, a welted rather than cemented construction, and a synthetic or rubber welt strip if the maker states the boot is resoleable.

    The free workaround: None reliable exists for certified safety footwear specifically, since certification testing is done on the finished boot and few certified vegan options exist yet; a non-safety-rated vegan boot is only a substitute where the job does not legally require certification.
