The one fact that makes the whole list readable
US law requires ingredients to be listed by common or usual name in descending order of predominance by weight, under 21 CFR 101.4. That means the first three or four items are almost always what the product actually is, and everything after the halfway point is a minor addition. Scan top to bottom, not the marketing copy on the front, and you are reading the list in the order that actually matters: most of the product first, trace ingredients last. One exception worth knowing: anything present at 2 percent or less can be grouped at the end after a Contains 2% or less of line, out of weight order, which is exactly where a lot of the animal-derived minor ingredients like L-cysteine or gelatin like to hide.

The names that need a source, not just a name
A second group of ingredients is legally allowed to come from either plants or animals, and the US label almost never says which. This is where a confident reader gets it wrong in both directions: assuming the worst about something that's usually fine, or waving through something that's a coin flip. Natural flavor is the biggest one. Under 21 CFR 101.22, the term covers flavoring derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof. Meat and dairy sit inside that legal definition. Most natural flavor in practice is plant or microbial, but the word alone doesn't prove it.

What the label genuinely can't tell you
Some animal involvement never reaches the ingredient list because US law only requires disclosing what's in the finished product, not how it was made. Cane sugar is sometimes filtered through bone char; the char isn't an ingredient of the sugar, so it's never listed. Wine and some beer can be clarified with isinglass, a fish-bladder collagen, or gelatin; the fining agent is filtered back out before bottling, so it counts as a processing aid, not an ingredient, and stays off the label. For any of these, the ingredient list is the wrong tool, and the honest answer is to check the brand directly or look for a claim or certification on the front of the pack.
