Two forms, two sources

That preformed form is the animal door, and a vegan does not use it. The other door is provitamin A, the plant pigments the body converts into the vitamin itself.

The plant route works. The one honest caveat is that the conversion step is not a fixed exchange rate from person to person.

In practice that argues for eating carotenoids often and across a range of foods rather than trusting a single item: sweet potato, carrots, pumpkin, red pepper, spinach, kale and other dark-green and orange vegetables, ideally with a little fat, which helps absorption. A vegan who does that is not relying on a fragile supply. Vitamin A deficiency is a problem of scarce diets, not of plant-based ones.
